WHAT IS THE DATE ON MAGICAL MAYHEM? HOW QUICKLY DOES TIME PASS?
Magical Mayhem operates in real time (one month equals one month), with September of each MM term coinciding with January of the real-time year. The current month and year are always listed in the Statistics sidebar.
WHERE IS YOUR CBOX OR DISCORD?
You can find our cbox on the bottom of the screen, towards the left hand side. It is a hover cbox that may not be compatible with all devices. A pop-out link is located in the Quick Links section of the sidebar. Here on Magical Mayhem, we do not have a site discord, but many players have their personal ones that they may give out at their discretion.
WHAT DOES “MARY-SUE” MEAN?
A Mary-Sue, sometimes referred to as a Gary-Stu or simply Sue, is a character who is perfect or nearly perfect, having little to no flaws, or otherwise flaws so minor that they have no weight. These characters often serve as the alter-ego or avatar of the author. Sues attempt to place themselves in positions of importance in any and all plots that they can, whether or not there is truly a reason for them to be there. Characters like this tend to lack any real personality and make plotting incredibly difficult due to being unrealistic. If you are unsure if your character falls into the Mary-Sue category, consider taking the MARY-SUE LITMUS TEST to find out.
CAN I CHANGE MY CHARACTER'S OCCUPATION?
Adults may change their occupation or take up an additional position by posting an application in the OCCUPATION APPLICATION. Students cannot change their house or year until the end of term, when they move up a year or graduate.
I WANT MY CHARATER TO BE [OCCUPATION], BUT IT ISN'T IN THE ROSTERS. WILL THEY BE ALLOWED TO HAVE THAT OCCUPATION?
Yes, within reason! Just because an occupation isn't listed doesn't mean it isn't allowed on the site: it just means that no-one has thought of it yet, and that you will be the first. Note that the staff may change the wording of the exact occupation for custom title reasons if needed.
HOW DO I JOIN A CLUB, HOUSE QUIDDITCH TEAM, OR STUDENT LEADERSHIP? HOW MANY GROUPS CAN I JOIN?
You can sign your characters up for organizations in their biography when you create them. If you would like to add an existing character to an organization later on, fill out the CLUBS AND ORGANIZATION APPLICATION. Note that some organizations are only for adults, and that school clubs are only for students (outside of their supervising professors). Students can be in no more than three school clubs, including student leadership and the quidditch team.
WHAT KIND OF PETS ARE ALLOWED AT HOGWARTS?
Just like Hogwarts in the books, students are allowed to bring a cat, toad, or owl. We also allow cage animals such as hamsters and ferrets, but they must remain in their cages and not be roaming around the castle. Students should not bring multiple pets with them to Hogwarts.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN ACCOUNTS USED FOR?
Because many people have multiple characters, members used to receive many copies of the same message when the administration sent out a mass PM. Since the introduction of main accounts, the PMs are sent to these accounts only to prevent this. Other private matters needing to be discussed with members will typically be sent to these accounts as well, so you always know where to look for it. You do not need to create a separate account for this: one of your characters will be designated as your main account. You can change your main account HERE; please be sure to do this if you plan to delete the character who is currently your main account.
I MADE A POST, BUT MY ACCOUNT'S POST COUNT DID NOT GO UP.
Only in-character posts will increase an account's number of posts. This includes posts made in all of the roleplaying boards, oneshots, time warp, journals, and owl post, as well as Alternate Universe threads and biography submissions.
WHY DO I HAVE TO REGISTER IN THE CHATBOX TO USE IT?
Unfortunately, Magical Mayhem and the chatbox host are susceptible to spam like everyone else. Requiring registration to use the chatbox prevents spambots from posting annoying or inappropriate content. It might seem like an unnecessary hurdle, but in the long run it makes the chatbox (and the site) a much friendlier place.
WHY CAN I NOT SEE THE [SUGGESTIONS/QUIDDITCH/SANDBOX] BOARD?
Some boards are locked until you have posted a biography, in order to prevent against spam or thievery. While we hate that a few people have to ruin it for everyone, we are committed to keeping Magical Mayhem a friendly and spam-free place as much as possible. As soon as you have posted a biography, these boards will become accessible to you, whether or not the biography has yet been sorted.
HOW WIDE IS THE POST AREA ON THE SITE?
The post area is five hundred (500) pixels wide. If you are using templates for posts, trackers, ads, or anything else, we'd advise you to choose a template that is no wider than this so that it fits naturally. Note that if the template you choose is more than this, the post area will scroll left and right to allow you to see the entire thing.
CAN I START A MASS THREAD?
Absolutely! We welcome members' ideas for plots that involve all or most of the characters on the site. However, in order to be labeled as a mass thread and therefore allow members to earn house points for posting in it, the thread starter must let the staff know, so that we can make sure it meets the requirements for a mass thread. Mass threads are defined as threads that are open to the entire site or to entire member groups (students, quidditch players, etc). Group threads are defined as threads that forward member plots only and are confined to specific characters, even if it involves three or more characters. If you are unsure if your thread qualifies, contact Admin Sammi .
CAN I MAKE A SKIN FOR THE SITE?
Absolutely! Though we can't guarantee we'll use every skin that we receive, we welcome member-created skins. New skins should be submitted to Mod Eryn to be considered. You can set up a test site with complete graphics and board stylings, or if you prefer you can submit only graphics and Rory will put the coloring together for the skin. The dimensions for all site images are as follows:
- Banner: 928px width, 200-400px height. Please also provide a copy of the header without characters or text.
- Sidebar Headers: 212px width, 120-280px height (must all be the same height).
- Staff Icons: 75px width, 75px height.
- Mini Profile Background: 200px width, 400px height. Must not be too busy. Solid image, no gradient, as it will do this automatically.
- Background (not required): No set size, but must be repeatable in all directions. If you have any questions regarding image suitability, please do not hesitate to contact Rory.

MY QUESTION ISN'T LISTED HERE. WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO CONTACT A STAFF MEMBER?
If a staff member is around in the chatbox, you are more than welcome to ask there! However, if we are not currently online, the best way to contact us is through PM. Though some of you may be friends with the staff and have outside methods of reaching us, we respectfully ask that you do not use IMs or social media to ask us site-related questions unless it is truly urgent. Like everyone else, the staff have lives outside of the internet and just cannot be in admin mode 24/7. Don't worry though—even when we're busy, we still check our inboxes frequently, and we will get back to your question as quickly as possible.
